David Berkowitz
The recent release of Michael A. Caparrelli's book Monster Mirror — in which Berkowitz, once again, confesses to ALL of the crimes — calls into question the many years of research and our conclusions about the case. There is, again, recent discussion on whether David could have actually constructed the elaborate letters to law enforcement and Jimmy Beslin, not to mention the Son of Sam sigil. It is my very firm opinion that he could not have accomplished either, and I'll tell you why.
The Sigil
The Son of Sam sigil or "logo" was drawn 3 times — once in what is known as the "Borelli letter," and then a 2nd and 3rd time, in the letter and on the back of the envelope for what became known as the "Breslin letter."

The sigil itself is not a complicated drawing, but the elements of the sigil, in my mind, lend to some knowledge of magickal concoction. Let's look at all the things that might be suggested.
The "X" or cross hatch... when one sees the alchemic symbols of the 4 elements, they are often organized within this crosshatch. There is an implied circle or wheel, and in that sense it resembles the Native American medicine wheel, mimicking the placement and division of the 4 elements. In the example of the Borelli letter, this symbol has 4 arrows — making it a representation of the 4 corners which is, indeed, witchy.
Venus... feminine; the Roman goddess of love and sexuality. Venus is central to ancient religious festivals. In the case of this particular Venus, the tail is long and represents an upside-down cross.
Mars... masculine; the god of war. Mars is Venus' counterpart in the Roman pantheon. In Latin mythology, Cupid is the son of Venus and Mars.
The cross... representing Christ
"S"... representing the Serpent or Satan
The sigil is an expression of opposites. Christ and Satan. Venus and Mars. Male and female. Love and war. The sigil is in line with Processean theology — the unity of opposites.
The sigil is reminiscent of the seal of Decarabia. The demon Decarabia (Carabia) is a fallen angel — the 69th of the 72 Spirits of Soloman aka the 72 demons of the Goetia. Decarabia is a marquis in hell with 30 legions of demons reporting to him. This symbolism not only hints at a practiced magician, but to a group or squad (legion) that is ready to battle.
It is my humble opinion that David's knowledge of the occult at that time was not thorough enough to co-mingle the elements in the symbol — which are cleverly combined, and denote familiarity with ancient concepts.

In my next post, I will discuss my thoughts on the book Monster Mirror, and why I'd be veryvery surprised if David has any intention of seeking parole.
